Wickford Art Association Scholarship Program Applications due February 21

March is Youth Art Month and in celebration, The Wickford Art Association (WAA) will present its annual Scholarship Fund awards to three Rhode Island public high school senior art students with a fourth award presented by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association in March.

Each Rhode Island public high school chooses one college-bound senior art student for consideration. The four winning students will receive cash scholarships in the amounts of $1,500, $1,000, $500 and with a fourth award from Rhode Island Art Education Association of $500 to use towards college. Winners also receive a one-year membership to WAA, a fine art exhibit in our gallery and exhibit space at the 57th Wickford Art Festival, ranked the #7 fine art festival in the country. This is an excellent, resume-building opportunity for college bound students. Interested students should speak with their art teachers about submitting their portfolio for consideration.

Warwick Center for the Arts offers “Painting Abstracts” Class

Find your creativity through abstract painting with this course that explores color, line, and form using acrylic paint. Students will be presented key concepts and techniques in short demos and handouts. One-on-one instruction will focus on individual interests and direction in creating a painting. Various abstract painting styles will be discussed and critiques will be offered! Taught by Eveline Luppi, this class meets on Mondays from 1-4pm, March 4th through April 8th. Warwick Center for the Arts Announces 2019 School Vacation Art Camps

Warwick Center for the Arts is excited to announce its 2019 School Vacation Art Camps in February and April. Choose from 2 arts camps: ages 6-11 with offerings such as Art of Yoga and Cartooning, and our teen art camp, ages 12-17, with classes such as Comic Books, Manga Drawing, and Mixed Media. Your child or teen can stretch his or her imagination and artistic skills with sessions in various popular mediums such as painting and sculpture. Led by experienced instructors with backgrounds checked, children will explore their creativity in a safe and encouraging environment.

Chat Club PVD, a new series of experimental performance and media

Chat Club PVD is a series of experimental performance and media. A bi-monthly curated cabaret and community salon, Chat Club PVD celebrates art that challenges genre, cultural hegemony, and institutions of the avant-garde. Chat Club embraces an exploratory, DIY ethos and provides an inclusive, supportive space for artistic experimentation, expression, and community conversations for performers and attendees. Performances include and are not limited to comedy (stand-up, sketch, improv), music, installation, literary readings, screenings, storytelling, performance art, and more. Chat Club PVD gathers to spark and sustain artistic collaboration and investigation.

Chat Club PVD debuts on Wednesday, January 16th on the AS220 Main Stage (Doors: 9:00 pm // Tickets: $5) featuring performers Alexander Dupuis, Muggs Fogarty, A.B. Rhode Island Department of Education launches Design Competition for High School Students

We invite students across Rhode Island to design the emblems for the newly adopted Council Designations, which are a brand new feature to the Rhode Island Diploma System! These are a mechanism for students to personalize their diploma credentials, externally validate achievement, and allow for public recognition of specific skills. Individually, or through classes and clubs, Rhode Island students of all ages are welcome to submit their designs for each of the Council Designations within the contest guidelines described here. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2018.

Calling all youth filmmakers: We want your movies!

Are you a filmmaker between the ages of 6-17? Providence Children’s Film Festival loves supporting a new generation of storytellers! Please consider submitting your film to the PCFF Youth Filmmaker Showcase, which takes place during our February Festival. Deadline November 15, 2018. Created in 2014, the Youth Filmmaker Showcase (YFS) celebrates the artistic talents of youth from here in Rhode Island and around the world. This juried collection of local, national and international films by young filmmakers presents creative and inspiring tales from a new generation of storytellers. The Showcase includes opportunities for the artists to meet other filmmakers during the Festival and to share their vision and discuss their inspiration and production challenges. Young filmmakers (ages 6-17) may apply as an individual or as a team. (e.g. schools, youth organizations, film clubs, etc.).

Providence City Walk Demonstration Day

On Friday, June 15th, grab a roller and follow the lead of one of three artists who have designed murals for three different sites at the intersection of Broad and Public street.  These murals will be painted in tempera and will likely only last a few days – be a part of something fleeting and fabulous!

You can also join in a Flashmob-style dance choreographed by Sokeo Ros, to be launched at 1:30PM on Saturday, June 16th at the intersection of Broad and Public Streets. Learn the moves here!

These events are all part of a “Demonstration Day”, which invites Providence residents to try out and give feedback on plans for the addition of bike lanes, green infrastructure, and public art along Broad Street. 82 people walking or biking on Broad Street were involved in a car crash between 2009 and 2015. The goal of City Walk is to make Broad Street safer and more pedestrian friendly.

CreativeGround Office Hours at RISCA

NEFA is excited to have Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) host our CreativeGround team in Providence, RI on May 30th! Members of our staff will facilitate office hour sessions to provide guidance on updating user profiles on CreativeGround to meet roster profile minimum requirements.

What is CreativeGround? CreativeGround is NEFA’s regional online directory of artists, cultural nonprofits, and creative businesses. Among many other dynamic features and functions, CreativeGround allows artists to display their designation as a vetted member of various New England State Arts Agency rosters. For example, Rhode Island’s Education Roster* can be found here.

Our May 30th office hours are specifically for Teaching Artists on RISCA’s Rhode Island Education Roster. Teaching artists on the roster can sign up for a timeslot by clicking the button below:
